MEMBERS OF THE TAVISTOCK SQUASH CLUB WILL BE DEEPLY SADDENED TO LEARN THAT JOHN JAMESON DIED ON WEDNESDAY 4TH NOVEMBER.
HE WAS A LOYAL SERVANT TO THE CLUB, ORGANISING CLUB NIGHTS AND COMPETITIONS AND WAS THE PERSON WHO TOOK THE TIME AND EFFORT TO DEVISE, CONSTRUCT, TEST AND IMPLEMENT OUR ON-LINE BOOKING SYSTEM. THIS IS JOHN’S LEGACY AND WE ARE FORTUNATE TO HAVE SUCH A FANTASTIC SYSTEM AT OUR DISPOSAL.
AS A KEEN SQUASH PLAYER, HE WAS A STRONG LEFT-HANDER, WHO ALWAYS TRIED HIS HARDEST AND NEVER GAVE UP. HE LIKED NOTHING MORE THAN LONG, TIGHT RALLIES, WITH PLENTY OF DEADLY DROPS AND TOOK DELIGHT IN CUNNINGLY DISGUISED SHOTS.
HE WAS ALWAYS ENTHUSIASTIC AND CHEERFUL AND ENJOYED THE CAMERARDERIE AND BANTER THAT WENT WITH BEING A MEMBER OF THIS CLUB.
HE WILL BE SADLY MISSED BY US ALL.
PETE WALSHE - CHAIRMAN

There is an old saying "May you live in interesting times." Certainly the last six months of Tavistock Squash Club have been both interesting and devastating. The year began sadly in February, with the tragic death of Pete Robertson, a very loyal supporter of the club. He did the cleaning, played regularly and died on club night, having just played and whilst watching others play.
I’m grateful to those club members who tried to revive him, the paramedics who came so quickly and the club members who attended his funeral. Pete was buried with his squash racquet and I hope he finds worthy opponents in heaven. We will be holding an annual handicapped tournament in Pete’s name, in October, at the start of the squash season.
The problems we have had with the poor water supply have now been solved. The Committee asked Colin Grice to manage the project and he has done an excellent job, assessing and appointing a contractor, ensuring the work was done properly and overcoming a range of different problems. The Club is very grateful to Colin for his hard work and we now have more than enough water for hot showers, running the sinks and flushing the toilets, all at the same time!
The Committee, ever keen to keep the fabric of the club in tip top quality and to spend your membership fees, decided that the ceiling of Court 1 was in an appalling state and needed urgent work. We approached GCI, a Tavistock based company who fit suspended ceilings for sports hall and supermarkets such as Tescos and Sainsburys. They gave us a very competitive quote and new ceilings and new lighting on both courts, were installed in only one week! I am sure you will agree that the quality of lighting in the courts is excellent and the brightness now means that those of us of a certain age who claim to have difficulty in seeing the ball, now have no excuses. The courts have never looked better and it is a pleasure to hear compliments from visiting teams, especially as West country and Fort Stamford courts are not having any money spent on them and are beginning to look decidedly tatty.
The cherry on the cake has been the hard work by John Jameson for over two years, to put into place our own on-line booking system. John J. wrote the programmes needed, sorted out the hardware, set up the system and with the help of Dave Ruffell, set the wheels in motion for Tavistock Squash Club to be one of the few in the whole country to have such a system. You will all have had letters giving you your own personal password, enabling you to book a court on-line. We are very lucky to have John J. to put this vision into reality and enable us to book courts using the computer at the club, or to book from our own homes, using the internet. I am grateful to John J. for his hard work and dedication and even when he was seriously ill, he was still thinking about when he would get the on-line booking up and running!
John White suggested there should be new Squash Leagues to encourage people to play and these have been up and running for a while now. I am grateful to Robin Burdfield for taking on this task and keeping the momentum going. A healthy league is surely symptomatic of a healthy club and long may this continue.
Your Committee consists of Dave Ruffell (Secretary), Robin Burdfield (Treasurer), Stuart Cox and Malcolm Holton (Club Maintenance), Malcolm Tripp (Junior Squash), Paddy Kerr and Pete Walshe (1st and 2nd team managers) and Brian Cunningham (Child protection Officer). They all work extremely hard on you behalf and I believe that the current vigorous state of the club is due largely to their efforts and I am very grateful to them for their unstinting work. The next areas of improvement include new aerobic equipment, tarmacing the car parking area, improvements to the Ladies’ changing room (I hear shouts of hurray) and improvement to the exterior of the club that can appear off-putting at first sight. Any problems or ideas please phone me on 01822 840162.
With kind regards,
Pete Walshe - Chairman.
